DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County’s boys and girls basketball teams entertained fans and themselves in a loose-jointed set of scrimmages Friday to cap the Meet the Marshals winter sports season tip-off at Conder Gymnasium.
Members of the MCHS archery and bass fishing teams were introduced, and the cheerleading and dance teams offered brief exhibitions of their talents after squad members were introduced.
Members of the Marshals mountain bike racing team were recognized for their success in the Tennessee Interscholastic Cycling League’s state championship meet. (Related story, this page.)
The Marshall County Special Olympics basketball squad was also introduced.
The freshman and varsity Marshals and Lady Marshals divided into squads for scrimmages, with fun the byword. Three-point shots, slam dunks and behind-the-back passes punctuated the action.
Coaches Gus Gillespie and Joseph Simmons will work to channel their players’ exuberance when season play begins in one week, with the season opener for both the boys and girls teams at home Tuesday night, Nov. 29, against Ballard Memorial.
NEXT WEEK: The Trib will offer basketball team profiles in next week’s edition just ahead of a busy first week of action.
After the Ballard Memorial double-header, the 21st annual Hoop Fest will take place in Conder Gymnasium on Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 1-3.
Both the Marshals and Lady Marshals will square off against teams from Massac County of Metropolis, Illinois, to open the tournament’s Session 1.
In Saturday morning’s Session 3, the Lady Marshals will meet Henderson County and the Marshals will take on Hopkinsville.
